Be Our Guest: 5/17 Virtual #HandsOff Protest Champions Disability Rights & Social Justice
On April 5, 2025, millions of individuals participated in protests to defend vital social programs. However, the disability community—a historically and systemically disenfranchised group that is deeply impacted by proposed changes to healthcare, education, and other essential services—was largely excluded from these actions due to in-person event barriers. The protests, while significant, were not accessible for many disabled individuals.
In response and to provide an inclusive alternative, we organized a virtual #HandsOff protest on April 5 to ensure our voices were heard. Spearheaded by two intersectional, disability-led nonprofit organizations, 10 Minutes A Day and DIYabled, our event received media coverage from Mother Jones and was one of the few #HandsOff protests centered on disability rights and the need for our community to be included in advocacy and activism.
Disabled individuals are the largest minority group in the U.S. and globally, yet we are often overlooked in conversations about social justice. This exclusion is rooted in the fact that, despite the mantra of “meeting people where they’re at,” our community is often not met where we are. Due to accessibility issues, the disability community often organizes virtually. We created a space where disability-related issues were the focal point, not an afterthought.
Building on the success of the April event, we are excited to announce a larger virtual, intersectional, disability-led #HandsOff protest on May 17, 2025, from 3-6 PM EST. The event will include:
- Advocacy Workshops on topics such as Section 504, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, disaster preparedness, and voting access.
- Performances and Showcases celebrating disability art, music, and culture.
- A Platform for Community Voices that are often overlooked in mainstream activism, including an interactive Q&A portion.
- An Accessible and Interactive Format, including live captions, ASL interpretation, and other accommodations to ensure full participation.
We are pleased to invite friends, allies, media outlets, elected officials, and community members to attend, amplify disability voices, and highlight the importance of accessible civic engagement. Accessibility in advocacy is not optional—it is essential. This event is an opportunity to inspire a deeper, ongoing commitment to inclusion across all movements for justice and equality.
